Many of my friends that work or worked in the National Weather Service have been affected by the reduction in the federal workforce that started after President Trump took office. The result was a significant loss of personnel in the NWS and in NOAA, leading to cuts in service because so many positions were vacant. The federal government has now decided to hire back about 450 positions that got cut earlier, recognizing that the NWS provides an essential service that is necessary for safety as severe storms and floods continue to affect the country. CNN recently wrote an article about the situation, which you can find at https://www.cnn.com/2025/08/05/weather/nws-rehiring-doge-layoffs-climate.
