The latest Drought Monitor, released today, shows that most of the region from Virginia to Florida saw an increase in dry or drought conditions over the last week. The only exceptions were Alabama and Georgia, which received some moisture before the Tuesday data cutoff from the big snowstorm that occurred January 21-22. The areas that got drier were generally either north or south of the band of moisture from the storm, although some precipitation that occurred after the data cutoff on the East Coast may be reflected on next week’s map. The next seven days should be quite dry in most of the region except for western Alabama so drought is likely to worsen on next week’s map.
