The multiple atmospheric river events in California this year have caused massive areas of flooding that has damaged trees by suffocating their root systems. This is similar to damage that we have seen here in the Southeast with Hurricanes Ian this past year and Hurricanes Irma and Matthew in previous years. The result of this damage is that yields of tree crops such as almonds is likely to be significantly reduced in at least the next year, and it may result in permanent loss of some orchards. Citrus groves in Florida remained under flood waters Sept. 13 after Hurricane Irma. “It’s still too early to know the full extent of the damage to Florida citrus,” Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam said in a Sept. 13 news release.
