The latest Drought Monitor, released this morning, shows a patchwork of improvements and degradations across the region depending on whether an area got hit or missed by the spotty rains. Overall, the percent of the region affected by drought had only minor changes. You can see the change map at Alabama improved overall but a tiny area of severe (D2) drought was added to the far northwest. Georgia and South Carolina improved overall, although the area of D2 drought in Georgia increased slightly. North Carolina, Virginia, and Puerto Rico all saw some improvements. Since the forecasts for the next week are for most of the region to get at least an inch of rain, I expect to see further improvements next week. The East Coast may see several inches.
