The latest Drought Monitor, released yesterday, shows that the area of moderate drought in the Florida Panhandle has gotten worse over the past week and is now classified as Severe Drought (D2). Most of this region was bypassed by the rain storms that drowned northern Georgia and Alabama in the last week. Fortunately, next week’s rain looks like it will be concentrated over the driest area, so this may be a short-term change. A tiny sliver of Moderate Drought (D1) also extends from Florida into southwestern Georgia, but that is also likely to go away next week.
