I’ve been getting a lot of questions about when we will start to experience fall temperatures. Unfortunately, I don’t see any short-term change in the weather pattern. We are currently under the influence of a large dome of high pressure which is fending off colder air and keeping us warm and dry. While this is happening in the East, the western half of the US will be experiencing temperatures that are much colder than normal. The high amplitude wave pattern that is causing this is very persistent, and if it flips we could see much colder temperatures. But for at least the next two weeks I don’t see much change. By mid-October, I do think we will cool off with overnight temperatures into the 50s, so that is something to look forward to. Meanwhile, the string of days with temperatures at or above 60 F continues for many stations in the region. A number of stations have also experienced their first 90 F day in October in many years.
