Project VORTEX studied tornadoes in the Southeast last year after several previous projects looked at tornadoes in the central part of the United States.  They started a second year of research on March 8 and it will go until May 8.  So on severe weather days you may see convoys of radar trucks and chase vehicles moving through the area.  Of course, we’ve already had two big outbreaks this year, but those occurred in January, too early for the VORTEX crowd to study.  They are particularly interested in seeing how severe weather and tornadoes interact with terrain, as opposed to the dynamics in open plains they have studied in previous years.  You can read more about the project at https://whnt.com/2017/03/20/second-year-of-vortex-southeast-tornado-research-kicks-off-in-the-tennessee-valley/.
