As Matthew approaches the coast, you might be wondering how the storm compares to past hurricanes in the area.  CNN published an article today which described some of the previous hurricanes which moved through the same region and how they compare.  You can read it at https://www.cnn.com/2016/10/05/us/hurricane-matthew-comparisons/index.html.  Needless to say, Matthew is far surpassing the strength of all of these storms and the impacts are likely to be far more severe than anything we have seen in this region since the 1890s when several severe hurricanes hit the Georgia coast.  That is the worst storm to hit the region in living memory.
