The tornado intercept and study program called VORTEX-SE started March 1.  This field project, Verification of the Origins of Rotation in Tornadoes EXperiment-Southeast, will send scientists out across the Southeast on days that are likely to have severe weather to study the development and evolution of tornadic supercell storms as systems move through the region.  The goal is to improve the understanding of how tornadoes form and cycle through their life cycle in the difficult terrain of the Southeast, which is much hillier than previous VORTEX experiments, which were undertaken in the central Plains.  You can read more about it at https://thestormreport.com/2016/03/vortex-se-to-begin-operations-today/ or in my previous blog post.
