{"id":355,"date":"2019-05-10T13:01:20","date_gmt":"2019-05-10T17:01:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/worthag\/?p=355"},"modified":"2019-05-24T10:06:38","modified_gmt":"2019-05-24T14:06:38","slug":"early-season-peanut-insects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/worthag\/2019\/05\/early-season-peanut-insects\/","title":{"rendered":"Early-Season Peanut Insects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We have gotten off to a good start with peanut planting this season.\u00a0 As peanut plants are emerging and growing, producers should scout and monitor fields for early season insects.\u00a0 The main ones to be looking for are <strong>thrips<\/strong>, <strong>tobacco budworm (TBW)<\/strong>, and possibly <strong>lesser cornstalk borer (LCB)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the <strong>thrips<\/strong> control decisions are made at planting.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_369\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-369\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-369 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/worthag\/files\/2019\/05\/5363043-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/worthag\/files\/2019\/05\/5363043-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/worthag\/files\/2019\/05\/5363043.jpg 768w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/worthag\/files\/2019\/05\/5363043-184x138.jpg 184w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-369\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thrips injury (left row) and control (right row) &#8211; Steve L. Brown, University of Georgia, Bugwood.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>UGA Peanut Entomologist, Dr. Mark Abney said, &#8220;Adult thrips were present on seedling peanuts in UGA research plots within 24 hours of emergence from the soil on 2 May. Plots with no insecticide treatment had high numbers of adult thrips on 7 May (13 days after planting). While thrips injury was not readily apparent at 13 days after planting, it will become obvious over the next two weeks as eggs hatch and immature thrips begin to feed. I encourage growers to check fields for thrips activity at 10 to 14 days after planting especially if no at-plant insecticide was applied. Acephate (Orthene) will be the choice of most growers if a foliar application is needed. Brown, University of Georgia, Bugwood.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Early season <strong>tobacco budworm<\/strong> infestations have been relatively rare the last five years, but there is a history of this pest causing significant damage to seedling peanut in Georgia. It does not take long for budworm caterpillars to defoliate plants that are only a few inches tall. Scouting is the only way to know what is happening in the field. Hopefully,this season we will see regular rainfall events to lessen these conditions.
