We are wrapping up the production meeting season for Worth County as we enter the time for corn planting to get started.

On Monday, March 2, 2026, the Worth County Extension Office hosted the Row Crop Disease Management Meeting at 5:00 p.m. Dr. Bob Kemerait, UGA Extension Plant Pathologist, shared the latest disease updates and control measures for diseases in peanuts, corn, and cotton. Our growers always look forward to getting the latest information that can help them to better manage crop diseases. Another guest speaker, Mrs. Diana McGrath, Georgia Dept. of Natural Resources (DNR) Wildlife Biologist, shared with growers about quail initiative and other wildlife programs and services that GA DNR offers.

Then at 6:00 p.m., the Worth County Cotton Production meeting began. Presentations from the Georgia Cotton Commission and the UGA Cotton Team were the highlights. Taylor Sills from the GA Cotton Commission shared about research and promotion of cotton for Georgia cotton producers. Following the Cotton Commission report, Dr. Camp Hand, UGA Cotton Agronomist, began the meeting with updates on variety trials, production practices, and deer management programs. Then Dr. Phillip Roberts, UGA Cotton Entomologist, had everyone’s attention with the insect pest management update. Dr. Roberts covered our main cotton pests and gave more information on a new pest (in 2025) to Georgia’s cotton production belt. The cotton jassid was confirmed in Georgia cotton in early July 2025 and it spread rapidly through the cotton producing counties in a matter of two months. We will be monitoring this new pest as the cotton season begins, and send out regular updates as new information is gathered.
