A website from UGA Cooperative Extension

If you watch social media for weather news, you will have noticed that another blast of very cold air is expected early next week starting on Sunday and lasting through Thursday. Many parts of the state will experience morning temperatures into the teens and some areas of the state may stay below freezing for a day or more. So you should be preparing for another round of frigid weather by taking care of livestock, insulating pipes or running slow drips during the coldest weather, dressing warmly when you go out, and carrying a winter weather kit in your car in case you break down.

The bigger issue next week is the likelihood of another round of snow and ice on Tuesday and Wednesday. I posted an article about it on my blog at https://site.extension.uga.edu/climate/2025/01/cold-week-ahead-and-someone-is-going-to-get-snow/ and you can read more details there. This morning’s snowfall probability map (below) shows an update on the likelihood of 1 inch or more of snow, especially in south Georgia. Many models are showing more than an inch of snow is possible, but it varies a lot from one model to another, from one model run to another, and from one day to the next, so there is still a lot we don’t know about the timing, type of precipitation, and amount. I think it is likely a lot of the state will see some snow, although northern parts may not see much and the far southeast may only get rain. Freezing rain is also a possibility. But it is too early to say with certainty, and we may still not be sure as late as Monday when the high resolution short-term weather models start to do their predictions.

If we can be of assistance at Worth County Extension, please let us know.
