Creeping Rush

Most species of rushes and sedges are not an issue in ponds. There is one species, slender spikerush, that can be a major issue. I’ve seen some of that in Southwest Georgia. This week we looked at Creeping Rush (Junicus repens). Rushes are emergent weeds like aligatorweed, bladderwort, lilly pads, etc. This is just growing in the shallow areas and is actually submerged. When it is submerged, UGA Extension Aquatic Specialist Dr. Gary Burtle recommends Diquat for control. Spot treat with a 2% solution in very shallow water with Diquat. If it moves out into deeper waters, we can sse up to 2 gallons of diquat 2 lb AI/gal per acre.
