Water is one of our most valuable and precious resources and we hope that you can share information about the importance of groundwater in our lives with your community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Did you know?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>96.5% of the earth&#8217;s water is found in the oceans (too salty for drinking, growing crops, and most industrial uses).<\/li><li>Only 2.5% of the earth&#8217;s water is fresh.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/water\/files\/2021\/03\/Sunday-Global-Water-percent.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"839\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/water\/files\/2021\/03\/Sunday-Global-Water-percent.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1158\" srcset=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/water\/files\/2021\/03\/Sunday-Global-Water-percent.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/water\/files\/2021\/03\/Sunday-Global-Water-percent-300x246.jpg 300w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/water\/files\/2021\/03\/Sunday-Global-Water-percent-768x629.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>About 3% of the earth\u2019s water is fresh, but most of it is frozen in glaciers and ice-caps.&nbsp; Less than 1% of the total water on earth is readily available for human use.&nbsp; Most of this water is located underground and is what we call groundwater.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Groundwater is water that infiltrated into the ground through porous soils and rocks. It fills pores and fractures in layers of underground rock called aquifers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Georgia groundwater resources are available in a variety of different aquifers as seen in the below figure from the USGS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/water\/files\/2021\/03\/Aquifers-of-Georgia.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"464\" height=\"323\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/water\/files\/2021\/03\/Aquifers-of-Georgia.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/water\/files\/2021\/03\/Aquifers-of-Georgia.jpg 464w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/water\/files\/2021\/03\/Aquifers-of-Georgia-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 464px) 100vw, 464px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Groundwater can be found in surficial aquifers (close to the surface) and in deep aquifers.&nbsp; Based on the location, the quality of this water can vary. People are dependent upon clean groundwater supplies for many household uses such as drinking and cooking as well as irrigating much of our agricultural production. We will be sharing interesting facts and tips for understanding and protecting our groundwater resources all week through the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Water Resources Team website and newsletter.
