The 2015 Conasauga River Watershed Cleanup of Whitfield and Murray Counties was a great success. We had a total of 359 volunteers participating and over 5.7 tons of garbage was removed from the Conasauga, its tributaries, and the surrounding areas! The following is a list of sites and there totals:
- Conasauga River at Hwy 2 had 27 volunteers (Murray County 4-H was part of this group) and collected 1640 lbs.
- Conasauga River at Lower King’s Bridge had 25 volunteers and collected 1520 lbs.
- Coahulla Creek at Prater’s Mill (Whitfield County 4-H was part of this group) had 71 volunteers and collected 1520 lbs.
- The Mill Creek Tributary had 36 volunteers and collected 1380 lbs.
- Carlton Petty Bridge had 8 volunteers and collected 399 lbs.
- The Holly Creek group had 37 volunteers and collected 844 lbs.
- The largest group (139 volunteers) picked up in and around the lakes and creeks of Lakeshore Park and Al Rollins Park, collecting a record 2250 lbs. of trash.
- Thanks to staff from the Conasauga Ranger District of the US Forest Service, we added three more streams (Muskrat, Hurricane and Stover Creeks) to our list of cleanup sites, bringing us up to a total of ten and picked up 1910 lbs of trash to include almost 40 tires.
The following sponsors provided funds to purchase the hats, tumblers, and t-shirts, as well as supplies, and hauled off the garbage: J+J Flooring, Shaw Industries, Dalton Utilities, Conasauga River Alliance, Modern Woodmen of America, The Nature Conservancy, Georgia’s Rivers Alive, Christian Heritage School, Dalton-Whitfield Regional Solid Waste Authority, and Whitfield County Public Works.
