Tammy van Dongen, a participant from Walton County, is a huge fan of the Walk Georgia program. “I have seen myself try harder to walk more and try different types of exercise,” she said.
She says being part of the Walk Georgia program has also helped her and her family makes better choices in what they eat.
Tammy’s four children keep her motivated to be healthy. She has several medical issues and she feels that walking everyday keeps her feeling better and keeps her moving.
“I want to see all four of my children grow and hope to enjoy grandchildren someday,” Tammy said.
One of the ways Tammy stays active is by walking to the store with her backpack to buy groceries. “I love walking, and sometimes I love walking by myself. This gives me time the think. I call it my pleasure time.”
Tammy has two teenagers still at home, and she gets them to walk with her occasionally. “I want them to enjoy life to the fullest and enjoy simple things like walking,” she said,
Tammy moved to Georgia about a year ago. The Walk Georgia program has been a great way for her to meet people in her area and learn more about the state. She has been documenting her Walk Georgia activity in a scrapbook and enjoys sharing photos of her walks with her friends in other states.
“I love the idea of exploring Georgia. I can’t wait to see how far I can go,” she said.
She even purchased a Georgia State Park Pass since participating in Walk Georgia and has started visiting the local state parks in the area. She and her family went to Fort Yargo and enjoyed hiking the trails there.
“It is interesting what can be seen as you walk. Along the sidewalks in the city, I see little flowers growing between the pavers. Along the trails I see things I have only seen in books.”
