Staying motivated

family hoola hoopingWalk Georgia may be coming to a close, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to stop exercising. Here are some tips on how to keep up the good work until next time.

Set smart goals

Whether it’s reaching a specific weight or being able to finish a 5k in a certain amount of time, having a measurable goal is crucial to staying motivated. It’s easy to lose interest when you don’t have anything to work toward.

When setting your goal, be sure to include a timeframe. Having a deadline will give you a sense of urgency.

Writing your goal down or telling someone about it will give your goal more weight. Also make sure your goal is reasonable; you don’t want to set yourself up for failure.

Get support from others

Telling others about your goal and having workout buddies will help keep you accountable. Sometimes all you need to stay motivated is a a good pep talk. You can even reach out to your Walk Georgia teammates. Try setting a goal that all of you can work toward or suggest exercising together.

Track your progress

One of the best parts about Walk Georgia is the ability to log your workouts. It puts into perspective how much exercise you are getting, as well as how much you’ve improved. Looking back to see how the amount of time you spent running has increased will give you a boost of confidence when you need it most.

Keep a notebook or use your phone to track your progress. If you have a smartphone, there are many free apps available to log your activity.

Visit our blog

Our blog will still be here even after the program ends. Come back and reread some of the articles or try one of our recipes. It never hurts to refresh your memory on how to stay healthy. Plus, we have articles from past years available as well.

Reward yourself

You deserve a reward for all of your hard work, especially after reaching a milestone or goal. If you decide on a reward when you set your goal, you’ll have an incentive to reach it. Once you treat yourself and then set a new goal, you can think back on how great your accomplishment made you feel.

Choose a reward that will give you the same rush of excitement as getting to move to a new county on the Walk Georgia map. Stay away from rewarding yourself with food and instead do something that is good for you. Maybe get a massage or buy a new pair of running shoes. Sometimes just having new workout out gear is the best motivation because you’ll be able to use it to reach your next goal.
