Help Others by Exercising: Charity Miles

Charity logosYou may think of exercise as doing something good for yourself, but with the Charity Miles app, your workout can make an even bigger impact.

The free app for Android and iPhones logs your walk, run or bike ride and donates money to a charity of your choice. Bikers earn 10¢ a mile and walkers and runners earn 25¢ a mile.

The best part is that all you have to do is exercise! The donations don’t come from your wallet, just from your participation. (The money donated is from a sponsorship pool.)

Before starting your workout, simply select one of the 20 available charities and whether you will be walking, running or biking. It then keeps track of your miles and automatically calculates your earnings. The minimum distance for a workout to count is 0.1 miles.

It will also keep track of your time, which you can use to log your Walk Georgia miles.

You can choose a different charity for each workout logged. In order to donate the money after a workout, you must allow the app to post your workout activity to Facebook or Twitter. This helps spread the word about the app in order to gain more awareness.

Achilles International, ASPCA, Autism Speaks, DoSomething.org, Every Mother Counts, Feeding America, Girl Up (United Nations Foundation), The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, Habitat for Humanity, Ironman Foundation, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, The Nature Conservancy, NothingButNets.net (United Nations Foundation), Partnership for a Healthier America, Pencils of Promise, Shot at Life (United Nations Foundations), Stand Up To Cancer, World Food Programme and Wounded Warrior Project.
