Go: Smithgall Woods State Park + Gold Fever

Today we’re making a trek to Helen, Ga. in White County to explore Smithgall Woods State Park. This state park is situated in the North Georgia mountains. With 5 miles of trails and 18 miles of roads, hikers and bicyclists alike can explore the area at their leisure. There is also a trail located near Smithgall’s cottages that will lead them to Dukes Creek Falls. Fishing enthusiasts will have a field day at Dukes Creek. This body of water is renowned trout stream, and anglers come from far and wide to try their hands at reeling in a big one!

Smithgall also has an opportunity for those of you out there who love history! The state park is hosting their Gold Fever event on Saturday, August 20th, from 9am to 12pm. Visitors will get the opportunity to learn about the role that gold mining played in the history of Smithgall Woods. Park rangers will lead you through a guided hike through the Martin Mine Trail. You will also have the opportunity to pan for gold in Dukes Creek during the hike. Maybe you’ll find a nugget of gold to go along with the nugget of wisdom this historical tour is sure to provide!
