The perfect weather of late reminded me about some fantastic local outdoor destinations for ‘moving more’ that we often overlook. One of my favorite spots in the Athens area is the State Botanical Garden. Recent trips with my daughter and son reminded me how easy it can be to forget about readily accessible outdoor venues that help us reconnect physically, spiritually and emotionally.
The State Botanical Garden of Georgia, or as many Athens locals say, the ‘bot garden’, is a treasure trove of options for those who enjoy being outside to get active or even to just hang out, read or study. It is chockfull of trails (over five miles of them!), paths, benches, grassy lawns, and botanical wonders. Spring brings an especially beautiful time to visit the bot garden. Around virtually every corner are plants, flowers, buds and vines bursting with color.
Have you forgotten about somewhere special that would make a fun and rewarding afternoon getaway? Think about local parks, trails and venues in your area just waiting to be rediscovered. There may be gold in them ‘thar hills!
Entrance to the The State Botanical Garden of Georgia is free. Operating hours for the Visitors Center are Tues. – Sat. 9 am. – 4:30 pm., Sun. 11:30 am – 4:30 pm. The display gardens and nature trails are open daily from 8 am – 6 pm.
