A Very Special Post, Part 1

How to get Jolly without the Jiggle:

Next week is our very last week of the pilot (!), which lines up perfectly with the holidays. We have a feeling most Walk Georgians will continue to stay active, because above all, it makes you feel awesome. However, the holidays pose a special problem. Part of the joy of the holiday season revolves around food. So how are we supposed to stay extra jolly and not gain extra jiggle?

The secret to having your cake and eating it too is simple—stay moving! A single indulgence won’t add pounds, but “indulgences” become the normal fare for months around the holidays. If you don’t counteract those extra treats with extra movement, you’ll see extra pounds! Walk Georgia has created a two-part, 25 day holiday list that will help you enjoy the season to its fullest and stay active! We’ve listed Part I below. Print it and plan it! Most of, all have fun!

The First 12 Days of Holiday Health

December 1– Time to deck the halls! Decorating and cleaning can burn up to 150 calories in just 30 minutes! Climbing the attic stairs and wrangling those evergreen branches can count as a workout, too!

December 2– You’ll want to take advantage of mistletoe all month long. Take a walk in your neighborhood and gather foliage to make faux mistletoe! Hang it and enjoy!

December 3– Where’s the best place in your town to get all-natural apple cider? Seek it out and spice it up, but don’t add sugar, simply top hot cider with cinnamon!

December 4– Give the gift of fitness. Do some research on spring races in your community and purchase registration for yourself and your best friend! Merry Fitness!

December 5– Holiday shopping can really burn some calories. Wear a pedometer and commit to taking 10,000 steps. You can do it!

December 6– Plant a permanent tree! Buy a small Cyprus or Pine and help someone in the future enjoy the beauty of the holidays.

December 7– Make it a Sunday Funday. Visit your favorite local park and walk the trails!

December 8– Treat yourself! Buy boxes of your favorite flavored teas. It’s an inexpensive indulgence that will keep you warm all month long, without adding an extra “layer”.

December 9– Georgia doesn’t always get a lot of snow. Create snowflakes from oilcloth or clear plastic covering fabric and hang them in your yard!

December 10– Have a dog? Buy a pair of antlers for your pooch and don your favorite red outfit. Walk your neighborhood delivering small holiday gifts, like mini-stockings stuffed with mulling spices.

December 11– Did you know that even main supermarkets sell roasted chestnuts? Buy a pack to share and enjoy the health benefits, including fiber, vitamins and minerals. Plus, they are lower in fat than most nuts!

December 12– It’s Friday night! Turn up the holiday music and get dancing! You can burn up to 610 calories after an hour of dancing!

Website updates

Here is what we have been working on this week:

  • Georgia schools, you are on our mind! We’ve made it easy for educators to create groups for a single school or a school system.  The group creation process will allow you to automatically generate subgroups for grades, as well as enter different schools within the school system.  This makes school group creation much faster.  We’ve also updated the “My Groups” page to allow you to set four “Favorites”, in other words we’ve created a shortcut to the groups you visit most frequently!  This will prevent you from having to sort through a list each time you look.

Do you have a suggestion or a healthy recipe for us? Email with any questions or suggestions. We’d love to hear from you!
