A website from UGA Cooperative Extension

Soil temperatures are currently 6 to 8 degrees from where we need to be. day time and night time air temps are spanning by up to 25 to 30 degrees. We have had several nights that dipped down to the low 40s. There are still some 40 degree nights in the forecast. Temperatures have been 10 degrees lower than forecasted on some days with in the last month.

Above, is a whole slew of reasons not to plant peanuts this week. In fact, it may take up to two weeks before we get acceptable planting conditions. Desired planting conditions are 68 Degrees F for 3 consecutive days with at least a week of warm weather to sustain those temperatures following that. Planting outside of these constraints could result in reduced stands. If we drop into the 40s on a night during the first 7-10 days following planting, the seed could be shocked to a point that could affect germination. Cold rains during this time could also shock the seed.

Bottom line…………………….

Don’t even consider planting for at least 1 week.

Don’t be surprised if we are not where we need to be next week and be prepared to wait another week from that point.
