{"id":2501,"date":"2026-03-11T10:04:16","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T14:04:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/tiftcoag\/?p=2501"},"modified":"2026-03-11T10:04:16","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T14:04:16","slug":"preplant-for-field-corn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/tiftcoag\/2026\/03\/preplant-for-field-corn\/","title":{"rendered":"Preplant for Field Corn"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preplant Applications for Field Corn<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The newer <span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">dicamba formulations (Stryax, Engenia) are\u00a0<u><em><strong>NOT<\/strong><\/em><\/u>\u00a0labeled for this\u00a0<\/span>use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Older formulations of dicamba (Clarity, Rifle, Sterling Blue) are labeled for this use, depending upon tillage system and soil type, as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><u><strong>PREPLANT AND PREEMERGENCE APPLICATION IN NO TILLAGE CORN:<\/strong><\/u><\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">Apply 16 fluid ounces of Clarity, Rifle, or Sterling Blue p<\/span>er acre on medium-or fine-textured soils containing 2.5% or greater organic matter. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use 8 fluid ounces per acre on coarse soils (sand, loamy sand, and sandy loam) or medium-and fine-textured soils with less than 2.5% organic matter.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><u>PREEMERGENCE APPLICATION IN CONVENTIONAL OR REDUCED TILLAGE CORN:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0 \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Apply 16 fluid ounces of Clarity, or Rifle or Sterling Blue per treated acre to medium- or fine-textured soils that contain 2.5% organic matter or more.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em><u>DO NOT<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0apply to coarse-textured soils (sand, loamy sand, or sandy loam) or any soil with less than 2.5% organic matter until after corn emergence.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Failure to follow these recommendations could result in excessive crop injury.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dicamba is not needed for preplant in field corn. Dr. Prostko and I did some trial work a few years ago on preplant burndown options for field corn, and by far my favorite combo is  Roundup or Gramoxone + atrazine.
