October is upon us and it has brought some cooler and hopefully drier weather. The 10-day forecast shows very little rain and we can sure go for it. I think there is a log jam at buying points. Sally kept us out and then right behind her we had a week of cloudy rainy weather. The cooler weather has slowed down peanuts and cotton. I have noticed quite a few peanuts on the ground in some fields. Looks like the culprit could be lesion nematodes. Lesion nematodes attack the pod and peg which can weaken the peg. Nematicides can usually fix this problem. If you’re defoliating cotton right now, remember as the temperature decreases your defoliant rates need to increase. I’ve seen some cotton with a little flush growth in the top so make sure you get some Thidiazuron (Drop) in there to knock it out. I would also go high rate on Ethephon (Prep) to make sure you get those last few bolls to open.
