She was writing about supporting ourselves and others when times get hard\u2026and in farming, there are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">lots<\/span> of times when things get hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During tough times, it is really important to <em>validate<\/em> the reality of how hard things are and not sugar coat them. Denying that things are hard just makes people feel invisible and small. But at the same time, we can\u2019t just wallow in how hard it is. We need to believe that there is a way for things to get better. We need <em>hope.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how do we communicate both validation and hope during tough times?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For me, what is coming to mind is the phrase \u201c<em>Yes, and also\u201d.&nbsp; <\/em>When we come from a \u201c<em>yes, and also\u201d<\/em> position, we can acknowledge the current difficulty (<em>yes<\/em>) and at the same time think about how to add to and build towards a future where things can get better (<em>and also<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Yes<\/em>, input costs are getting really high\u2026<em>and also<\/em> I can talk to a financial adviser to see how we can revise our budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Yes<\/em>, things are really hard now\u2026<em>and also<\/em> with the support of family and friends I think we can find a solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Yes, and also<\/em>\u2026validation and hope. How are you communicating <em>yes, and also<\/em> to yourself and to others during hard times? Try it.
