Farmers know this\u2014so much of what farmers do is unnoticed and unappreciated, as food \u201cmagically\u201d appears on the grocery shelves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another group that is often unnoticed is the caregivers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"221\" height=\"228\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/thriving\/files\/2025\/04\/caregive.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-974\" style=\"width:230px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>These people, frequently family members or friends, take care of someone vulnerable. Often that is a child, or a frail adult. One of the most challenging types of caregiving can be caring for an older adult with dementia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because caregivers are often family, we can think of this work as \u201cnatural\u201d and a part of what family members are supposed to do. Caring for family members can feel natural, but that doesn\u2019t make it any less hard.&nbsp; Caregiving is hard\u2014it takes time, energy, and lots of patience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are a caregiver, I hope you give yourself a little breathing space and a little grace. You are doing important work and you are appreciated.&nbsp; If you know a caregiver, tell them you notice and appreciate their hard work, and offer to help a little if you can. Caregivers need support so they can thrive too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have a colleague who is studying caregivers of people with dementia, to better understand their experience so we can provide better supports.
