{"id":917,"date":"2025-01-17T13:46:33","date_gmt":"2025-01-17T18:46:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/thriving\/?p=917"},"modified":"2025-01-17T13:46:33","modified_gmt":"2025-01-17T18:46:33","slug":"the-arts-can-promote-youth-mental-well-being","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/thriving\/2025\/01\/the-arts-can-promote-youth-mental-well-being\/","title":{"rendered":"The Arts Can Promote Youth Mental Well-being"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Thanks to our guest blogger Debra Cox for providing some thoughts\u00a0on how the arts promote mental well-being!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Have you ever thought of ways to increase your mental well-being?\u00a0\u00a0One way is to dive into the arts and learn to express yourself to the point where your creativeness can capture how you feel.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/thriving\/files\/2025\/01\/youth-arts.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-918\" srcset=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/thriving\/files\/2025\/01\/youth-arts.jpg 800w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/thriving\/files\/2025\/01\/youth-arts-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/thriving\/files\/2025\/01\/youth-arts-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Our youth can use more of the arts in their life.&nbsp;&nbsp;Many think of the arts as painting, playing instruments, or singing, and dancing.&nbsp;&nbsp;The arts are associated with so much more\u2014things like horticulture or cooking can also be seen as the arts.&nbsp; Sadly, many students are not exposed to the various components that make up the arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many schools do offer art, music, cooking, and working with plants.&nbsp;&nbsp;STREAM is the acronym for Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics, and there are schools focusing on this concept to help students.&nbsp;&nbsp;But we need more programs, so every student has the opportunity to benefit from the arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Often, youth (and their families) don\u2019t realize what the arts can do for a person\u2019s mental health. Artistic expression can help decrease depression, feelings of anger, and anxiety according to the American Art Therapy Association.&nbsp;&nbsp;If students are involved in the creative process, then it may help them to regulate the different emotions they feel plus enhance their cognitive skills\u2014all things that students need to be successful in school and in life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check with your local community to see what types of arts programming are offered for youth.&nbsp;&nbsp;Many can join a band or chorus, take music lessons from local individuals, or be part of a community music theater group.&nbsp;Some communities have art, woodworking, or ceramic classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are lots of opportunities for youth to engage with the arts at school. Painting and drawing are offered at some schools.&nbsp;&nbsp;Public schools usually offer agricultural courses where students can learn about horticulture.&nbsp; Students may be able to get into a culinary arts program.
