It\u2019s been really helpful, so I am passing it along to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember the old term \u201cworrywart\u201d as in \u201cShe is such a worrywart\u2014she\u2019s always worried about something\u201d?\u00a0 Well, guilty as charged. I\u2019ve been the queen of worrywarts most of my life.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/thriving\/files\/2023\/08\/istockphoto-1133737051-612x612-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-472\" width=\"318\" height=\"318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/thriving\/files\/2023\/08\/istockphoto-1133737051-612x612-1.jpg 612w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/thriving\/files\/2023\/08\/istockphoto-1133737051-612x612-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/thriving\/files\/2023\/08\/istockphoto-1133737051-612x612-1-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 318px) 100vw, 318px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>There are so many things to worry about, and almost all of them are out of our control.\u00a0 I think this is particularly true in farming, where weather, prices, input costs, tariffs, regulations, supply chain\u2014all of these things are outside any producers control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is &#8220;In the Circle&#8221;?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s hard to stop worrying, though.&nbsp; That\u2019s where my friend\u2019s phrase comes in handy. When I\u2019m ruminating over something stressful, she asks me <strong>\u201cIs it in the circle?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Things that are \u201cin the circle\u201d are things that I have some control over. If something is not in the circle, worrying about it isn\u2019t helpful. Her next question is <strong>\u201cWhat <em>is<\/em> in the circle?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>What about this situation do I have some control over, and am I acting within that circle?  So, for example, high interest rates are not in the circle. But, having a financial advisor I trust, keeping all my financial documents organized, and doing research on good financial strategies\u2014these things are in the circle.\u00a0 These are things I can do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Controlling storms and the weather are not in the circle, but having insurance in place and documents safe, preparing my home for the storm, and having emergencies supplies are in the circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most importantly, while I can\u2019t keep stressors from coming my way, I can take care of myself (staying SAFER) so the stress doesn\u2019t make me sick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you feel yourself spiraling with worry, try my friend\u2019s strategy. Ask yourself \u201cIs it in the circle?\u201d and if it isn\u2019t, figure out what <em>is<\/em> in the circle and spend your energy there.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently learned a useful phrase for dealing with worry from a friend of mine (I think she borrowed it from Stephen Covey).
