The fibers can be blended or combined in various yarn and fabric structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blended fabrics&nbsp;are woven or knitted from yarns which have been made by blending two or more fibers together before they are spun into yarn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Combination fabrics&nbsp;are those which contain two or more different types of fibers; the warp or filling yarns may be a blended fiber and the yarn in the other direction may be a single fiber. Union fabrics have warp yarns made of one fiber and filling yarns made of another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By making use of these two techniques, textile engineers can now build into fabrics desirable characteristics that cannot be achieved through the use of only one fiber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In blends the addition of&nbsp;<em>natural fibers<\/em>&nbsp;will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Increase moisture absorbency<\/li><li>Provide greater comfort<\/li><li>Reduce static electricity<\/li><li>Improve aesthetic appeal<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In blends the addition of&nbsp;<em>synthetic fibers<\/em>&nbsp;will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Improve strength<\/li><li>Improve wash and wear characteristics<\/li><li>Minimize shrinking or stretching<\/li><li>Improve abrasion resistance<\/li><li>Improve wrinkle resistance and recovery<\/li><li>Improve pleat and crease retention<\/li><li>Add luster or sheen<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Natural Fibers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Natural fibers are those found in nature and can be categorized by the source of their origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plant sources<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Cotton<\/li><li>Linen<\/li><li>Ramie<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Characteristics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Strong<\/li><li>Absorbent<\/li><li>Poor wrinkle resistance and elasticity<\/li><li>Affected by mildew and sunlight<\/li><li>Shrinks unless treated<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Animal sources<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Silk<\/li><li>Wool<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Characteristics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Absorbent<\/li><li>Elastic<\/li><li>Wrinkle resistant<\/li><li>Attacked by insects<\/li><li>Damaged by alkaline soaps and high temperatures<\/li><li>Affected by sunlight<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Manmade Fibers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cellulosic sources<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Rayon<\/li><li>Acetate<\/li><li>Triacetate<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Characteristics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Luxurious texture and appearance<\/li><li>Good drapeability<\/li><li>High absorbency for rayon (less for acetate, much less for triacetate)<\/li><li>Takes dye well<\/li><li>Costs less than other man-mades<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chemical sources<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Acrylic<\/li><li>Modacrylic<\/li><li>Nylon<\/li><li>Olefin<\/li><li>Polyester<\/li><li>Rubber<\/li><li>Spandex<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Characteristics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Extremely wrinkle resistant<\/li><li>Dries quickly<\/li><li>Resists abrasion, dirt, mildew and mold<\/li><li>Very heat sensitive<\/li><li>Poor moisture absorbency<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mineral sources<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Glass<\/li><li>Metallic<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Characteristics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Resists moths, mildew, and weather<\/li><li>Non-absorbent<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here you will find information on natural and manmade fibers, and details on fiber blends and combinations.
