Remove Stains From Mustard

Apparel/Fabrics

Scrape off excess mustard. Sponge with a commercial cleaner* or apply a pre-wash soil and stain remover. Rinse. Work a light-duty liquid detergent and a few drops of vinegar into stain. Rinse well. If stain remains, apply 3 percent hydrogen peroxide. Rinse. Launder.

NOTE: Treat immediately.

*Look for products containing petroleum distillates or hydrocarbon such as trichloroethane, xylene, methylenechloride, methane, benzene and/or naphtha. These chemicals may be found in such spot removers and cleaners as Guardsman’s Afta, Dap Cleaner and Thinner, Goof Off, M-1 Remover, Goo Gone, K2r.

CAUTIONS:

  • Always read the care label before trying any stain removal method. Do not use any products or procedures prohibited by the care label.
  • Be careful any time a commercial product or combination of cleaning supplies are used.
  • Always pretest each cleaning agent on an inconspicuous area first to determine colorfastness.
  • Be sure to store and dispose of products/cans/containers as recommended. Keep out of reach of children.
  • When using caustic or commercial cleaning solutions, be certain to provide for adequate ventilation.

Carpet

Blended Fibers, Synthetic Fibers, Wool

  1. Remove excess spill using a dull knife, spatula or plastic credit card. Sponge with clear, cool water. Blot with a clean, white absorbent cloth or paper towels.
  2. If stain remains, mix 1 part ammonia to 4 parts water. Sponge the ammonia-water solution on the stain. Blot with a clean, white absorbent cloth, rotating it so the stain is picked up. Repeat this process until no more stain is being removed. NOTE: Ammonia will turn the yellow stain red. Decide which color will show up more on your carpet before you use ammonia.
  3. Spray the stained area with a general purpose household cleaner (such as 409 or Fantastic). Cover with an absorbent pad which has been moistened in the solution. Let stand 10-15 minutes. Sponge with clear, cool water, taking care to remove all traces of ammonia and spray cleaner. Blot thoroughly to remove excess moisture. Place clean, white folded absorbent cloths on the area. Weight down with books or heavy objects. Let stand several hours. Remove weight and cloths. Run your hand across carpet (against the carpet nap) to set the pile. Allow carpet to air dry.

CAUTIONS:

  • Be careful any time a commercial product or combination of cleaning supplies are used.
  • Always pretest each cleaning agent on an inconspicuous area first to determine colorfastness.

NOTE: Ammonia damages silk and wool. It you must use on these fibers, dilute with equal amounts of water and use sparingly. You may have to live with a slight yellow or red stain as mustard is a very difficult stain to remove successfully.

Hard Surface Floors

Brick, Concrete, Resilient, Stone/masonry, Tile, Wood

Mustard contains tumeric, a yellow dye. If not treated immediately, it can be impossible to remove. Once mustart has set, the stain is almost impossible to remove from plastic materials.

Resilient

Immediately wipe up any spills with a cloth or sponge dipped in warm sudsy water. Rinse thoroughly and wipe dry with a soft cloth.

Wood (Oiled, Stained, Varnished, Waxed)

Immediately mix dishwashing detergent in hot water and swish to make a great volume of suds. Dip a cloth in only the foam and apply to the mustard stain. Rinse with a clean cloth dampened with cool, clear water. Polish or wax when dry.

Upholstered Furniture

Mustard contains tumeric, a yellow dye. If not treated immediately, it can be impossible to remove.

Blended Fibers, Fur, Natural Fibers (Cotton, Linen), Synthetic Fibers (Acrylic, Modacryllc, Nylon, Olefin, Polyster, Triacetate), Velvet

  1. If stain has just occurred, spray stain using a commercial fabric spot cleaner, following directions on the container.
  2. If the stain is older, scrape as much of the spill as possible, and sponge stained area using clear water. Use a medicine dropper to apply a drop or two of a white dishv’3shing detergent to the stain. Using a sponge or folded absorbent cloth, moistened with clear water, sponge and blot the stain until all detergent is removed and stain is gone.

CAUTION: Take care not to spread the stain or over-wet the upholstery fabric and stuffing.

Fiberglass, Natural Fibers (Silk), Synthetic Fibers (Acetate, Rayon), Wool

  1. Lift off any excess spill with a dull knife or spatula. Use a medicine dropper or syringe to apply several drops of a commercial dry-cleaning solvent’ to the stain. If fabric is strong enough, scrape using a dull knife or spoon, moving the edge of your scraping tool back and forth across the stain in short strokes. Be gentle to avoid damaging the surface. To remove tough, mustard stains you may need to add more drops of the dry-cleaning solvent as you scrape, working the liquid into the stain and loosening the stain. When the stain is removed, blot thoroughly with the dry-cleaning solvent. *
  2. If stain remains after using step 1, sponge stained area with clear water and apply a Wet Spotter (made by combining 1 part glygerine, 1 part white dishwashing detergent and 9 parts water) to the Wet Spotter, add a few drops of white vinegar. Scrape again (as described in step 1) to loosen stain. Sponge wiht clear water and blot thoroughly. Allow to dry.
  3. If stain still persists, moisten area with 3 percent hydrogen peroxide and add a drop of ammonia. Do not let it bleach any longer than 15 minutes, then sponge with clear water and allow to dry thoroughly. been added. Rinse well with clear water and wipe dry.

* Look for products containing petroleum distillates or hydrocarbon such as trichloroethane, xylene methylenechloride, methane, benzene and/or naphtha. These chemicals may be found in such spot removers and cleaners as Guardsman’s Afta, Dap Cleaner and Thinner, GOOF OFF, M-1 Remover, Goo Gone, K2r, etc.

CAUTIONS:

Certain fabrics, such as acetate and rayon, are more likely than others to develop rings when treated. When cleaning these fabrics, apply solvent to sponge and touch the fabric lightly so that the stain remover is absorbed as slowly as possible. Limit your strokes to the immediate stained area to keep the moistened area as small as possible and avoid spreading the stain. Do not use ammonia on silk or wool.
