Remove Stains From Glue (Airplane, Super, Adhesive/Cellulose Tape)

Apparel/Fabrics

Airplane Glue

Sponge with a commercial cleaner.* Cover with pad of absorbent material dampened with the commercial cleaner. Change pad as stain is picked up. Allow to dry. Apply amyl acetate to stain and cover with pad of absorbent material dampened with amyl acetate. Keep moist 15 minutes. Use a spoon to help loosen stain. Flush with the commercial cleaner. Sodium perborate bleach may remove final traces of stain.

*Look for products containing petroleum distillates or hydrocarbon such as trichloroethane, xylene, methylenechloride, methane, benzene and/or naphtha. These chemicals may be found in such spot removers and cleaners as Guardsman’s Afta, Oap Cleaner and Thinner, Goof Off, M-1 Remover, Goo Gone, K2r.

Super Glue

This stain cannot be removed.

Adhesive Tape

Apply ice to harden stain. Scrape off excess. Place stain face down on absorbent paper towels or clean cloth. Sponge with a commercial cleaner.* Change absorbent material as it picks up stain. Let dry. Launder.

Cellulose Tape

Test colors first, then sponge with alcohol. Dilute alcohol with 2 parts water for use on acetate.

Carpet

Blended Fibers, Natural Fibers, Synthetic Fibers, Wool

  1. Scrape the gummy matter from the surface of the carpet using a dull knife, spoon or spatula. Don’t press hard, but move the edge of your scraping tool back and forth across the stain in short strokes. Be gentle to avoid damaging the stained surface. Sponge the stained area using a commercial dry-cleaning solvent’ or a commercial carpet spot lifter. Blot thoroughly and allow to dry. When dry, rub fingers through cleaned area to restore the pile.
  2. If stain persists, apply a Dry Spotter (made by combining 1 part coconut or mineral oil and 8 parts liquid dry-cleaning solvent)’ to the stain and cover with an absorbent pad dampened with the Dry Spotter. Change the pad as it picks up the stain. Let it stand as long as any stain is being removed, keeping both the stain and pad moist. Sponge the area with a dry-cleaning solvent.* Allow surface to dry completely.

Brick, Concrete, Stone/masonry (Slate, Terrazzo)

Remove any excess as soon as possible. Wash with a solution of Washing (sal) Soda) or detergent (not soap) and water using a cloth or soft-bristled brush. Rinse thoroughly with clear water and allow to dry.

Resilient (Asphalt, Cork, Linoleum, Rubber)

Scrape away the gummy matter using the dull edge of a knife, spoon or spatula. Dip a clean sponge or cloth into warm, sudsy water and rub the gummy matter. The warm water will soften the glue so it can be removed with the sponge or cloth. Rinse with warm water and wipe dry with a clean cloth.

CAUTION:

Do not use an abrasive product.

Resilient (Vinyl)

  1. Remove any excess immediately before it sets. Wipe the surface with a cloth dipped in warm sudsy water. Rinse well and wipe dry.
  2. If residue remains, gently scrape to remove the gummy matter with the edge of a dull knife or spoon, taking care not to gouge the surface. Gently rub any remaining gummy matter with a piece of fine grade (#0000) steel wool dipped in liquid or paste polishing wax. Wipe away soiled wax as you work. Pol ish with a clean dry cloth.

Wood (Oiled, Painted, Polyurethaned, Varnished)

  1. Wipe up any excess as soon as possible. Mix dishwashing detergent in hot water and swish to make a volume of suds. Dip a cloth in only the foam and apply to the area. Rinse with a clean cloth dipped and wrung out in clear water. Polish or wax as soon as dry.
  2. If glue remains, use a dull knife or metal spatula and lightly scrape the substance from the surfar Be very careful that you don’t cut or scrape the surface. Polish or wax as soon as dry. FURNITURE: ALUMINUM,

Cast/wrought Iron – Adhesive/cellulose Tape

Pick off as much of the gummy matter as possible using your fingertips or tweezers. If possible, soak the stain in warm to hot sudsy water. This should loosen the sticky substance enough to make it possible to be wiped off. Should any remain, gently rub the area in one direction only with a soft scouring pad to remove any traces of the stain.

Aluminum, Lucite, Plastic, Vinyl – Airplane Glue

Dampen a small piece of cloth, or the end of a cotton swab with a commercial dry-cleaning solvent.* Apply to the label and allow to remain only long enough to loosen the label. Remove the label. Immediately wipe away the excess fluid and wash with sudsy water. Rinse and wipe dry .

Fiberglass – Adhesive/cellulose Tape

Fold a paper towel or cloth to make a thick pad, as large as the label. Dampen pad with clear ammonia and lay pad over label (using masking tape to hold pad onto a vertical surface). Leave pad in place for 1/2 to 2 hours. Re-dampen the pad if it tends to dry out. Label will slide off. Sponge the area using sudsy water. Rinse and wipe dry.

NOTE: These directions are given primarily for removing sticky labels from plastic. If the label on the plastic has been wet, or the article has been stored where it was hot and humid, the removal will be more difficult.

  3. If stain remains, apply amyl acetate and cover with an absorbent pad dampened with amyl acetate. Keep moist for 15 minutes, blotting occasionally. Cover the pad with a plastic wrap to minimize evaporation. Finish by sponging with dry-cleaning solvent.

NOTE: Acetone can be substituted for amyl acetate.

Fur – Adhesive/Cellulose Tape

Take care not to remove the fur fibers when removing the excess glue. With ice cubes in a plastic bag, freeze to harden the remainder of the adhesive. Gently brush with a fine-bristled brush or a damp sponge. Take care not to soak the backing or pelt. If a gummy residue remains, scrape it carefully in the direction of the nap with a razor blade. In extreme cases, the gummy matter can be carefully cut away with a pair of scissors if it is at the very tip of the hairs.

Leather – Airplane Glue, Adhesive/cellulose Tape

  1. Carefully scrape to remove the gummy matter from the surface of the leather. Dip a cloth or sponge into the suds of a mild soap and gently scrub until the remaining matter is removed. Dry with a clean cloth.
  2. If matter remains, lightly apply a pad dampened in a commercial dry-cleaning solvent.’ If the leather is untreated with a finish, apply a conditioner such as saddle soap. Note: Be sure to test the solvent in an inconspicuous area as it may remove color from pigmented leather.

Mix dishwashing detergent in hot water and switch to make a great volume of suds. Dip a cloth in only the foam and apply to the stain. Do not allow the water to run as it will cause hard-ta-remove streaks. Rinse with clear water and allow to dry thoroughly.

Glass, Mirror, Tile – Adhesive/cellulose

Fold a paper towel or cloth to make a thick pad, as large as the label. Dampen pad with household ammonia and lay pad over label (use masking tape to hold pad onto a vertical surface). Leave pad in place for 1/2 to 2 hours. Re-dampen the pad if it tends to dry out. Label will slide off. Sponge the area using sudsy water. Rinse and wipe dry.

Carefully scrape to remove the gummy matter from the surface of the paper. Dip a cloth or sponge into the suds of a mild soap and gently scrub until the remaining matter is removed. Dry with a clean cloth.

Paper (Suede)

  1. Carefully pick off as much excess adhesive matter as possible, using a pair of tweezers or your fingertips. Gently rub an artgum eraser over the remaining substance.
  2. If soil remains, carefully rub the spot with an emery board or very fine grade sandpaper. You are attempting to remove a fine layer of the suede, so work carefully.
  3. Use a commercial suede cleaner/conditioner.

Tile (Ceramic)

Rub the gummy area with a cloth or sponge dipped in warm, mild soapy water to which a few drops of ammonia have been added. Rinse with clear water. Dry thoroughly.

Apply Super Glue remover as directed on container.

Kitchen/bathroom Cabinets – Adhesive/cellulose Tape

Rub the gummy area with a cloth or sponge dipped in warm, mild soapy water to which a few drops of ammonia have been added. Rinse with clear water. Dry thoroughly.

Grout – Adhesive/cellulose Tape

  1. Remove as much of the gummy matter as possible. Dip a wet toothbrush into a little powdered cleanser and gently scrub. Rinse with clear water and dry.
  2. Commercial Tile and Grout Cleaners can be purchased at grocery or hardware stores. They are excellent products for cleaning many grout stains.
