Remove Stains From Furniture Polish

Carpet

Synthetic Fibers, Wool

  1. To remove excess spill, sprinkle an absorbent such as cornmeal on stain. Let it stand until the excess is absorbed. Vacuum up or brush away. Apply a combination solvent (such as Magic, Shout, or Spray ‘n Wash) to an absorbent cloth and place on stain, applying pressure with hand or foot. Check the cloth. If some of the stain is transferring to the cloth, the combination solvent is working. Continue blotting and applying pressure until all stain is removed. Sponge with clear water. Blot thoroughly to remove excess moisture. Rub hand across carpet (against the nap) to set the pile. Allow to dry.
  2. If stain remains, apply a solvent called lacquer thinner (a mixture of acetone and several other strong solvents) to a clr’h and blot the stai~ed area. Blot and allow to dry. NOTE: Lacquer thinner can be amazingly effective on grease, oil, wax and gum. It dissolves without leaving a residue.

CAUTIONS:

  • Be careful any time a commercial product or combination of cleaning supplies are used.
  • Always pretest each cleaning agent on an inconspicuous area first to determine colorfastness.
  • When using caustic, toxic, aromatic or flammable cleaning solutions, be certain to provide for adequate ventilation. Do not have an open flame near flammable cleaning solutions. Wear rubber gloves.
  • When using solvent-based cleaners on carpet or upholstery, be careful not to overwet the carpet or the fabric. Solvents can destroy the carpet backing and foam padding used in upholstery.
  • Do not use lacquer thinner or acetone on acetate or triacetate carpets and fabrics. They wi II turn to froth immediately.
  • Lacquer thinner will dissolve many plastics and painted surfaces.

Hard Surface Floors:

  1. Blot up the excess spill being careful not to spread the stain. Sponge the stain using a commercial dry-cleaning solvent. * Blot and allow to dry quickly.
  2. If stain remains, sponge with Dry Spotter (made by mixing 1 part coconut or mineral oil with 8 parts liquid dry-cleaning solvent). * Cover the stain with an absorbent pad dampened with the Dry Spotter. At intervals, apply pressure to the pad. Check to see if stain is being picked up by the pad. Keep the stain and pad moist with the solution. Repeat Methods #1 and 2 until no more stain is removed. Allow to dry completely.
  3. If stain remains, sponge with water. Make a solution of 1 part glycerin, 1 part wh;te dishwashing detergent and 8 parts water. Add a few drops of white vinegar and apply to the stain using a medicine dropper or small syringe. Cover the stain with an absorbent pad dampened with the solution. At intervals, apply pressure to the pad. Check to see if stain is being picked up by the pad. Keep the stain and pad moist with the solution. When no more stain is visible, sponge with clear water. Blot thoroughly and allow to dry quickly.

* Look for products containing petroleum distillates or hydrocarbon such as trichloroethane, xylene methyleneci>loride, methane, benzene and/or naphtha. • Overwetting with water may cause the finish on the upholstery fabric to migrate and thus leave a circle in the treated area.
  • Ammonia damages silk and wool. If you must use on these fibers, dilute with equal amounts of water and use sparingly.
  • Vinegar should be diluted with 2 parts water to 1 part vinegar if used on cotton or linen.

Leather

Mix a solution of mild soap in lukewarm water. Swish to create a great volume of suds. Apply the foam with a sponge to the stain. Wipe with a clean, dry cloth. If a greasy or waxy stain remains, sponge very lightly with a cloth dampened with a dry-cleaning solvent. * Test on an iinconspicuous spot as solvents can remove color from pigmented leathers. Quickly wipe with a clean cloth. Condition the leather if necessary.
