Water-Based Cosmetic

For a water-based cosmetic, dampen stain and rub with bar soap or pre-treat with liquid, heavy-duty laundry detergent or a paste of granular laundry detergent and water. Launder.

Oil-Based Cosmetic

For an oil-based cosmetic, sponge with a commercial cleaner’ or waterless hand cleaner. Rinse with water. Air dry. Apply detergent to stain. Launder. If stain remains, put a few drops of ammonia in light-duty liquid detergent solution and apply to stain. Rinse. Launder.

Look for products containing petroleum distillates or hydrocarbon such as trichloroethane, xylene, methylenechloride, methane, benzene and/or naphtha. These chemicals may be found in such spot removers and cleaners as Guardsman’s Afta, Dap Cleaner and Thinner, Goof Off, M-1 Remover, Goo Gone, K2r. These products can be found at hardware stores, discount department stores, and grocery stores. HOMECARE 1-13

Lipstick

  1. Apply a commercial cleaner’ or a pre-wash soil and stain remover. Blot with absorbent material. Continue treatment until pigment is removed. Rinse. Rub light-duty liquid detergent in stain until outline is gone. Launder. Repeat if necessary.
  2. Apply a commercial cleaner’ and blot immediately. Continue until no more stain is removed. Sponge with water. Apply diluted hand dishwashing detergent and a few drops of vinegar. Blot frequently with absorbent material. Flush with water. Allow to dry. Sponge with alcohol. Allow to dry. Use chlorine bleach, if safe for fabric, to remove final traces of stain.

Suntan Lotion

Soak in a solution of 1 quart warm water, 1/2 teaspoon liquid hand dishwashing detergent, and 1 white tablespoon vinegar for 15 minutes. Rinse with water. Sponge with water. Wash. Soak in a solution of 1 quart warm water and 1 tablespoon sodium perborate bleach for 30 minutes. Treat stained area with a commercial pre-wash soil and stain remover, let stand 1 minute. Wash.

Eye Pencil/Eyeliner/Eyeshadow, Face Powder, Hair Spray, Hand Lotion, Liquid Foundation, Mascara, Rouge

  1. Sponge stain using a clean cloth dampened with a commercial dry-cleaning solvent, being careful not to soak carpet. Using folded absorbent cloths, or paper towels, blot until as dry as possible. Allow to dry completely. Sponge with clean water. Blot again to remove moisture. Allow to thoroughly dry. Then brush area with hand to restore pile.
  2. Mix 1 teaspoon of a neutral detergent (a mild detergent containing no alkalies or bleaches with 1 cup of lukewarm water. Blot the stain using a clean cloth or sponge dipped in solution. Sponge with clean water and blot until as dry as possible.

Synthetic Fibers, Wool

Lipstick

  1. Sponge the area with a dry-cleaning solvent. Blot immediately with absorbent material changing the pad so it picks up the stain. Blot until all stain is removed. let all the solvent evaporate.
  2. If the stain persists, apply a “Wet Spotter” (made by combining 1 part glycerin, 1 part white liquid dishwashing detergent, 8 parts water and a few drops of ammonia). Blot frequently with an absorbent material. Flush with water to remove all traces of the ammonia.
  3. If stain persists, apply a Wet Spotter to which a few drops of vinegar has been added. If fabric is strong enough, tamp or use a spoon. Flush with clear water. Allow to dry.

Remove excess stain substance by sponging or gently scraping. Mix a solution of Washing (sal) Soda or a heavy-duty detergent with water. Scrub the stained area using a soft-bristled brush. Rinse well with clear water and allow to dry.

Wipe any spills or brush away any excess stain. With a cloth or sponge dipped in warm sudsy water, wash the surface. Rinse well with water and wipe dry with a clean cloth.

Lipstick:

Mix a solution of warm sudsy water and a few drops of ammonia. Dip a plastic scouring pad (do not use steel wool) into the solution and rub gently. Rinse well and wipe dry.

Wipe any spills or brush away any excess stain. With a cloth or sponge dipped in warm sudsy water, wash the surface. Rinse well with water and wipe dry with a clean cloth.

Lipstick:

  1. Mix a few drops-ol ammonia in 1 cup rubbing alcohol. Soak a white blotter with the solution and place it over the stain. Weight it down with a piece of glass or other heavy object. Continue applying the solution unti I the grease is drawn out and any remaining stain is bleached out.
  2. If any color remains, make a poultice (or paste) of chlorine bleach, powdered laundry detergent and water. Apply to the stain and cover with a damp cloth to retard drying. Leave until stain has been bleached out.

Mix dishwashing detergent in hot water and swish to make a great volume of suds. Dip a cloth in only the foam and apply to the stain. Rinse with a cloth or sponge dipped in clear water and wrung almost dry. Wipe dry immediately with a soft cloth.

Lipstick:

Using a fine grade (#0000) steel wool pad, apply a solvent such as naptha or mineral spirits or solvent-based wood cleaning wax to the stain. Buff with a clean cloth. Add additional wax if needed.

  • Do not use concentrated liquid commercial household cleaners or scouring powders.
  • Do not use water solutions or cleaners which have to be rinsed off with water.

Furniture

Wicker, Wood (Oiled, Polyurethaned, Varnished)

Eye Pencil, Eyeliner, Eyeshadow, Face Powder, Hair Spray, Hand Lotion, Mascara, Rouge:

Mix dishwashing detergent in hot water and swish to make a great volume of suds. Dip a cloth in only the foam and apply to the stain. Rinse with a cloth or sponge dipped in clear water and wrung almost dry. Wipe dry immediately with a soft cloth. Follow cleaning by polishing or waxing as usual.

Lipstick:

  1. Apply mineral spirits or naphtha to clean cloth. Wipe the stain with the cloth, rotating so that the clean surface continues to pick up the stain.
  2. Using a fine grade (#0000) steel wool pad, apply paste wax to the stain. Rub with the grain of the wood. Buff with a clean cloth.

  1. Sponge stain using a clean cloth dampened with a commercial dry-cleaning solvent, being careful not to soak upholstery. Using folded absorbent cloths, or paper towels, rotating to a clean surface as it picks up stain. Blot until as dry as possible. Allow to dry completely.
  2. Make a Dry Spotter by combining 1 part coconut or mineral oil with 8 parts dry-cleaning solvent. Apply Dry Spotter to stain, using a medicine dropper or syringe (being careful to not overwet the area). Cover with a pad of absorbent material dampened with the Dry Spotter. Allow to remain as long as any stain is being removed. Change the absorbent pad as it picks up stain, continuing to keep the pad moist with the Dry Spotter. When the stain is removed, blot with dry-cleaning solvent. Allow to dry completely then sponge with clean water.
  3. Mix 1 teaspoon of a neutral detergent (a mild detergent containing no alkalies or bleaches with cup of lukewarm water. Blot the stain using a clean cloth or sponge dipped in solution. Sponge with ( water and blot until as dry as possible.
  4. If the stain is on a delicate fabric, make a Wet Spotter by combining 1 part glycerin, 1 part liquid dishwashing detergent and 8 parts water. Add a few drops of ammonia to the solution. Apply the Wet Spotter to the stain, using a medicine dropper or syringe. Cover with a pad of absorbent material dampened with Wet Spotter. Allow to remain as long as any stain is being removed (continuing to keep absorbent material damp with Wet Spotter). Blot thoroughly. Allow to dry then sponge with clean water.

NOTE: A Wet Spotter can be stored in a plastic squeeze bottle with a small cap. Shake well before each use. Label the bottle before storing.

Then sponge with clear water.
  2. If the stain persists, apply a “Wet Spotter” (made by combining 1 part glycerin, 1 part liquid handwashing detergent, 8 parts water and a few drops of ammonia). If the fabric is strong enough, tamp or use a spoon. Blot frequently with an absorbent material. Sponge lightly with water to remove all traces of the ammonia.

  2. If the grease stain remains, powder the stain with an absorbent such as cornmeal. Give it plenty of time to work (2 – 3 hours or overnight). Gently brush it out. Repeat if necessary.
  3. As a last resort, dip a cloth in a commercial dry-cleaning fluid. Dab gently at stain. Do not rub.

  2. If the stain persists, sponge with water, then apply a “Wet Spotter” (made by combining 1 part glycerin, 1 part liquid handwashing detergent, 8 parts water and a few drops of ammonia). Tamp and blot frequently with an absorbent pad. FIush with water to remove all traces of the ammonia. Allow to dry.

  1. Mix a few drops of ammonia in 1 cup rubbing alcohol. Soak a white blotter with the solution and place it over the stain. Weight it down with a piece of glass or other heavy object. Continue applying the solution until the grease is drawn out and any remaining stain is bleached out.
  2. If any color remains, make a poultice (or paste) of chlorine bleach, powdered laundry detergent and water. Apply to the stain and cover with a damp cloth to retard drying. Leave until stain has been bl eached out.

Marble

  1. Place a white blotter soaked in non-flammable dry-cleaning fluid* over the spot and let dry. Repeat several times if necessary.
  2. If stain remains, try bleaching with hydrogen peroxide. Apply it directly to a flat marble surface. Apply it as a poultice (hydrogen peroxide mixed with a mild detergent or Whiting to form a paste) to a vertical marble surface. Add a drop or two of ammonia and let the poultice remain until the bubbling stops. Then rinse with water.
