  1. Scrape away excess caulking material. Mix 1/2 teaspoon of a white dishwashing detergent in 1 cup warm water. Apply 1 tablespoon of the solution to the stain and allow to remain for 1-2 minutes giving the warm, sudsy water time to soften the caulking compound. Agitate with fingers and blot. You may need to repeat this process several times, or until all traces of the caulking are removed. You may have to pick off the caulking particles that adhere to the top of the pile. Sponge with clear water. Blot thoroughly. Cover with a stack of dry absorbent towels to which a heavy weight has been added. Allow to remain until all moisture has been removed. Remove the absorbent cloths. Run your hand across carpet (against the nap) to set the pile. Allow to air dry. Vacuum all remaining loose particles of the caulking.
