The things that have been proven to reduce burrower bug injury are deep tillage and the use of granular chlorpyrifos. It is obviously too late to do anything about tillage choices, but growers who are concerned about burrower bugs still have time to make a decision about applying the granular insecticide. Here are some important things to keep in mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Granular chlorpyrifos requires rainfall<\/strong> or irrigation after application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Granular <strong>chlorpyrifos <\/strong>application <strong>will often flare caterpillar and mite <\/strong>populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Liquid formulations of chlorpyrifos can not<\/strong> be applied post emergence in <strong>peanut<\/strong> fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>No insecticide<\/strong> <strong>other than<\/strong> granular <strong>chlorpyrifos<\/strong> has been shown to be <strong>effective at reducing<\/strong> burrower bug <strong>injury<\/strong> in peanut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I <strong>only recommend<\/strong> the use of granular <strong>chlorpyrifos<\/strong> in fields with a <strong>history <\/strong>of burrower bug <strong>injury<\/strong> or in fields where <strong>active burrower bug infestations<\/strong> are known to exist.                                                                                           <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Burrower bug<\/strong> populations can be <strong>assessed <\/strong>in the field using <strong>pitfall traps<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have questions about this or other insect management concerns in peanut, contact your local University of Georgia County Extension Agent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We routinely get questions in mid summer about how to manage peanut burrower bug.
