2015 Corn Weed Control

Here are some good pointers from Dr. Eric Prostko, UGA Extension Weed Scientist, on 2015 Corn Weed Control:

Thanks to Rome Ethredge, Seminole County Ag Agent, for posting this originally.  Here is a link to his post:

The first thing we need to do to be successful in managing weeds in our corn crop is to start clean!

Start Clean

Keep in mind that just because you ran a harrow across the field, this does not mean that you are starting clean.

Disk not enough

Next, we need to use a preemergence herbicide program.  Then come back early with Atrazine+ another postemergence product. Some examples are shown below.

Atrazine +

Make sure you come back early with your postemergence sprays.  Below is some data from Dr. Prostko that shows what a later herbicide application can do to corn yields.

Be Early

Lastly,  be careful with complex tank-mixes.  It is impossible to know how all of our crop protection products will interact when mixed.  If you are not sure about a tank mix, do a jar test before mixing it in your sprayer.  If you are not sure how to do a jar test, your local county agent can assist you with this process.
