The 2014 Farm Bill is certainly stirring a lot of interest among many of our area farmers. It is unlikely to have official interpretations and guidance from USDA for several months but that may be too late for some of the decisions that must be made by area growers. Although this may sound like a bleak situation, we have hope on the horizon.
A few agriculture oriented organizations are coming together to bring some timely information about the more clear language of the farm bill as well as offer some direction that may aid area producers with some of the decisions they are facing. Georgia Farm Bureau, Southwest Georgia Farm Credit, AgGeorgia Farm Credit, AgSouth Farm Credit, and University of Georgia Cooperative Extension are combining efforts to bring area growers information pertinent to their individual operations. Topics will include coverage options, crop base decisions, payment yield update decisions, and several other topics that are crop specific. Below is a link and description of the meeting dates and locations. Meeting in our region include Bainbridge, Tifton, and Americus.
If you plan to attend any of the meetings, please call your local extension office and inform them of how many will attend in your group and which location you will be attending. This will help in ensuring that enough refreshments will be available at each of the locations.
