Each livestock lesson or experience shared by National 4-H Council on behalf of the various states have their own fun spin on teaching about livestock to youth. The OSU 4-H experience is short and involves food, which who doesn’t love a lesson with food! I hope that is not just me! The OSU livestock lessons can be easily shared on social media for youth to watch from home or staff can be recreate the lesson for an in-person 4-H club; however, always remember to give credit to the 4-H program who created the lessons staff use. I personally liked the first video on nutrition because it compared the similarities of what we eat to livestock. I found the experience fun, quick, and easy to follow.

The Nebraska 4-H Egg Discovery is a great formal virtual lesson. The lesson is longer than the last, but the staff ask engaging questions throughout and have youth complete problems to better understand the material. There are several other lesson and experiences included in the above hyperlink, but these are two I wanted to highlight with you all.

I encourage you to consider adding in one agriculture focused lesson or experience in the next 6 months. As you can see the above agricultural lessons still fall within several teaching areas such healthy living, caring for others, science, and more. Teaching about livestock can put a fun new and important twist on your educational program.

As always feel free to reach out to your local 4-H staff to see how you can partner, if you need support on leading a new program, or simply to brainstorm ideas.

Keep up the great 4-H work!
