These projects focus on teaching the benefits of home food production and developing skills and knowledge in growing food, managing community gardens, or contributing to food banks or kitchens. With MGEV instruction and leadership, community gardens can become a valuable tool for fighting hunger and poor nutrition as fresh produce becomes accessible.<\/p>\n<p>To address this initiative at the Grow Strong! 2017 conference, Dr. Judy Harrison will discuss food safety for the school, community, and home gardens. Dr. Harrison is a Professor in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, Dept. of Foods and Nutrition at The University of Georgia.\u00a0 She serves as a food safety specialist for UGA Extension.\u00a0 She is involved in training Extension Agents, conducting applied research, developing educational materials and in delivering and evaluating food safety education programs for a variety of audiences.\u00a0 Her work has included curriculum development and delivery of programs on growing and selling safe produce for farmers and farmers\u2019 market managers. She has provided food safety training for Food Corps volunteers working with school gardens through Georgia Organics.\u00a0 She is trained in the delivery of educational programs to meet requirements for growers and processers under the Preventive Controls for Human Foods Rule and the Produce Safety Rule.\u00a0 She is a member of the Institute of Food Technologists and the International Association for Food Protection.<\/p>\n<p>We look forward to all that Dr. Harrison will share with MGEVs, and look forward to seeing you there!
