The Georgia First Detector Program is hosted by the University of Georgia’s Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health. The primary goal of the Georgia First Detector Program is to establish a network of well-trained and dedicated volunteers, also known as “First Detectors” that will assist in the ongoing collection of invasive species detections in the state and identify new infestations to help Early Detection and Rapid Response (EDRR) programs to slow and control invasive species before they become unmanageable.
There was a First Detector training scheduled in September at the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge in Folkston, GA. Unfortunately, due to hurricane Ian, the NWR closed and the training had to be postponed. The new date for the training is November 21, 2022 at the same venue. Registration has been re-opened. The training is free, but registration is required. Scroll down to the about section on the event’s home page for all the training details.
Current, active Master Gardener Extension Volunteers will receive Advanced Training credit for attending the entirety of this training and earning their First Detector certification.
