Arbor Day is celebrated in Georgia on February 21, 2020. It’s a great time to talk to people in our communities about the importance of trees, how we should care for them, and perhaps even plant a few!
Events and activities that would be great at showcasing tree planting include:
- Lunch-n-Learn — Include a tree presentation in your monthly lecture series. Discuss the environmental, economic, and community benefits of trees and share tree choices suitable for home landscapes. Use your email distribution lists, websites, and social media outlets to share the date, time, and location.
- Community Festival Exhibit — Reserve booth space at your community’s Arbor Day festivities. Use your UGA Master Gardener table drapes to promote your identity. Create display boards that present tree planting techniques and tree choices. Have plenty of UGA publications on hand for folks to take home (as well as a brochure for the MGEV program!).
- Educational Tour — Plan a tour of your educational demonstration garden to highlight all kinds of trees. For more tips on planning a tour, check out this previous Trellis post. Promote the tour in local newspaper columns, on websites, and social media.
- Workshop/Demonstration — Consider planting a tree during a hands-on workshop. Maybe you have a tree installation planned for your demonstration garden this year. A workshop offers a great time to get that done with lots of hands! It also can boost participants’ confidence when they see a tree being planted.
