Six students from Long County competed in the 2023 Southeast District Project Achievement event at Rock Eagle 4-H Center this past weekend from February 3rd-5th. This consists of creating a project portfolio that includes main project work, research/sharing and helping, leadership and community service activities, and other 4-H related activities that have been completed by the 4-H’er in the 2022 program year. After their portfolio submission, they write a speech and create posters or PowerPoint slides as visual aids for their presentation. Along with competing in their project category over the weekend, they also have the opportunity to vote for the new District Board of Directors, meet new friends, and learn more about the amazing opportunities that 4-H provides students district and statewide.
Daniel Marrero, 12th grade 4-H’er, placed 3rd in the History category. Bobby Staudt, 12th grade 4-H’er, placed 2nd in the General Recreation category punching a ticket to State Congress held in Atlanta in July. He will compete against other district winners and represent Long County very well. Both Bobby and Daniel also received special recognition by competing in DPA every year since 5th grade and attended a Graduating Senior Reception where they received 4-H graduation chords. Mackenzie Spurgeon placed 2nd in the Sports Individual category. Addy Shaw placed 3rd in the History category. Brandon Kauffman placed 1st in the Food Labs: Pizza category. Trinity Holston placed 1st in the Performing Arts: Instrumental category.

It takes a lot of time and effort to prepare these speeches and have the confidence to deliver in a room full of strangers which speaks volumes to their work ethic and character,” says Shelby Mumma, 4-H Educator.
