The Healthier Together Calhoun Coalition met on August 26th. Work groups continued plans for increasing access to healthy foods and physical activity. The communications workgroup introduced the new Healthier Together Blog and Facebook page. The healthy foods work group reported on progress with community gardens and informed about the application process to receive garden materials. The physical activity workgroup continued plans for walking trails in each of the municipalities.
Sylvia Davis and Ann Centner (Family and Consumer Sciences Agents from Baker and Early counties) were on hand to lead the coalition in stretching exercises. They shared the importance of stretching for our physical health. At the end of their session, there was a drawing for a Fitbit, which was won by FFA member and student of Calhoun County High School, Joel Juarez!
After the meeting, several coalition members visited the first community garden at the Extension office, which was recently planted with a variety of fall vegetables. Healthier Together Calhoun is purchasing six new raised garden beds for both the Pataula Charter Academy and the Calhoun County High School. These new gardens will be under the direction of the Ag Education teachers and will benefit the students at each school.
