Food Waste Class at the Center for Innovative Teaching

We will be teaching a food waste and reclamation lesson for them. Starting with a short lesson introducing the problem of food waste and food insecurity in the US. With uneaten fruit from their share table earlier in the week, students will then participate in a cooking lab around whatever they saved.

Event: Athens-Clarke County Green Life Expo and Awards
Date and Time: Saturday, February 23, 2019, 10 am – 5 pm

Info: The Green Life Expo is designed to provide inspiration and the tools needed to help our community members become more sustainable in our everyday lives. The expo runs from 10 AM to 2 PM, with an environmentally themed movie at 2 PM, followed by the Green Life Awards Ceremony at 3. We will be hosting hands-on workshops, sustainability panel sessions on industry and education, a kids activity area, and exhibitors from local businesses and organizations. For its part, GIKI will perform environmentally inspired songs and skits for children attending the event.

Date and Time: February 23, 2019, 11 am – 2 pm

Info: Researchers at this free networking event will each have a booth to demonstrate their lesson plans and chat with local K-12 educators. We will be tabling at the event, handing out information concerning the program and demonstrating some of our own STEM education activities in the garden and with food.

Event: 5th Annual School Lunch Challenge
Date and Time: March 23, 2019, 10:00 am – 2 pm

Cost: Free to those who sign up. More information soon.
Info: We will be assisting middle school students or some of the students from our summer program in doing some food demonstrations for the event. The event, hosted by the Richard B. Russell Library, brings together the Clarke County School District and other campus and community partners for a fun, educational event engaging the Athens community with the past, present, and future of the National School Lunch Program! Additionally a cooking competition among the four past winners of the event will go head to head to create school lunch plates which attendees will sample.
