VISTA's go to Burke County

Earlier this week, we and staff from South Jackson Elementary went to visit Burke County to see their school nutrition program, which has received national recognition. They’re in the second year of a “farm to school” program and most of the food in their cafeterias comes from Georgia farmers. The students get an education about where their food comes from and enjoy delicious cafeteria meals!

The school district purchased an unused bus depot for food storage.

Charlotte showed us their packaging machine, which can save up to half a dollar for a side of fruits or vegetables instead of buying individual portions.

Their salads are sourced from Fisheads, an aquaponic greenhouse in nearby Sardis.
