Field trip time!

This week Clarke Middle School students made a trip out to the University of Georgia’s volunteer-run organic garden, UGArden, and The State Botanical Gardens as part of the ExperienceUGA program which helps to provide innovative and hands-on learning opportunities to Clarke County School students.

AmeriCorps VISTAs, UGArden interns and volunteers taught students about the importance of pollinators, composting, cover crops, the benefits of eating fresh vegetables like kale and spicy peppers and they had fun doing it!

Educational games and activities promote learning in such a way that also helps individuals to make memories and foster new interests. Who doesn’t like throwing a mud ball with cover crop seeds at targets in a garden plot? Or participating in a spicy pepper eating contest?

Big thanks to UGA for providing such a unique opportunity for 7th grade students in Clarke County schools that may not otherwise be exposed to sustainable gardening education and more.

Next week-Burney-Harris-Lyons 7th grade students will have the same exposure to the awesome things happening here in Athens!
