{"id":766,"date":"2013-02-20T21:40:18","date_gmt":"2013-02-21T02:40:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ugagreenway.wordpress.com\/?p=766"},"modified":"2023-01-03T15:29:14","modified_gmt":"2023-01-03T20:29:14","slug":"a-childs-healthy-home-tip-to-keep-pests-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/greenway\/2013\/02\/20\/a-childs-healthy-home-tip-to-keep-pests-out\/","title":{"rendered":"A Child\u2019s Healthy Home Tip to Keep Pests Out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently I was teaching an online class about keeping your home healthy and reducing the asthma triggers in your home.\u00a0 I talked about some of the main asthma triggers in your home \u2013 dust mites, pet dander, secondhand smoke, mold, cockroaches, and mice.\u00a0 The training included action steps to take to reduce or eliminate these contaminants in your home.<\/p>\n<p>One of the participants was taking care of a sick child and connected to the call from her kitchen.\u00a0 As she was listening to my voice through her computer speakers, her 8 year old son was in and out of the kitchen asking for water and food.\u00a0 That evening her daughter asked if she could take a sucker up to her room, before the mother had a chance to respond, her son said, \u201cNO, we must keep food in the kitchen.\u201d\u00a0 He expanded on that to tell his sister that if crumbs were left in her room then the cockroaches would come into her room; and did she know that a mouse could get into her room through a dime-sized hole.<\/p>\n<p>Amazingly, he was listening to my webinar presentation! I burst out in laughter when I heard the story.<\/p>\n<p>His mother had told him many times not to take food out of the kitchen, but he tended to argue with her.\u00a0 Once he heard over the computer from \u201cmom\u2019s work\u201d that food in the bedroom attracts cockroaches, he now helps his parents enforce the house rules and keep the house healthier.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/greenway\/files\/2013\/02\/mouse.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-770\" alt=\"mouse\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/greenway\/files\/2013\/02\/mouse.jpg\" width=\"249\" height=\"202\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/greenway\/files\/2013\/02\/dime.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-769\" alt=\"dime\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/greenway\/files\/2013\/02\/dime.jpg\" width=\"135\" height=\"134\" srcset=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/greenway\/files\/2013\/02\/dime.jpg 225w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/greenway\/files\/2013\/02\/dime-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 135px) 100vw, 135px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You never know who will hear the messages we send out.
