{"id":1555,"date":"2013-10-08T09:00:01","date_gmt":"2013-10-08T13:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ugagreenway.wordpress.com\/?p=1555"},"modified":"2023-01-03T15:30:26","modified_gmt":"2023-01-03T20:30:26","slug":"healthy-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/greenway\/2013\/10\/08\/healthy-children\/","title":{"rendered":"Healthy Children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Your children are at a greater risk of exposure to environmental hazards than you.&nbsp; These hazards exist where they live, learn and play.&nbsp; Children engage in &#8220;riskier behaviors&#8221; than most adults.&nbsp; Two big <strong>&#8220;environmental risky behaviors&#8221;<\/strong> children engage in are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Crawling across floors that can have a number of different contaminants on them<\/li>\n<li>Putting toys and other things in their mouths, exposing themselves to lead paint, plastics, chemicals, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is important for all of us to do what we can to keep our children safe.&nbsp; Here are five steps you can take to make your home safer for your children (and you).<\/p>\n<p>(1.) &nbsp; Keep potentially harmful chemicals out of your home. Don\u2019t buy or store <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.uga.edu\/publications\/detail.cfm?number=C1051\">hazardous household chemicals<\/a>.&nbsp; When selecting a product, look for \u201ccaution words\u201d like POISON (highly toxic) and DANGER (extremely flammable, corrosive or highly toxic).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/greenway\/files\/2013\/10\/mr-yuk.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1557\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/greenway\/files\/2013\/10\/mr-yuk.jpg\" alt=\"Mr Yuk\" width=\"102\" height=\"102\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(2.) &nbsp; Choose to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/guides\/cleaners\/content\/methodology\">safer cleaning products<\/a> or make your own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcs.uga.edu\/docs\/HACE-E-73-1_english_may_2015_recipes.pdf\">green cleaners<\/a>. &nbsp;Watch this short video on how you can live greener.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Green Cleaning Recipes: Living Healthier &amp; Greener\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cO3rKRy2Gd8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>(3.) &nbsp; Remove your shoes and add a doormat. This will leave lead dust, pollen, pesticides, and other contaminants at the door. Mold is one of several asthma triggers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcs.uga.edu\/ext\/housing\/mold.php\">Take Action to Prevent Mold<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>(5.) &nbsp; Test your home for radon. It\u2019s inexpensive and easy to do.&nbsp; In Georgia go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ugaradon.org\/\">www.ugaradon.org<\/a>. Outside Georgia go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/radon\/whereyoulive.html\">https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/radon\/whereyoulive.html<\/a>.
