People separate their trash and even walk or drive to large bins to drop it off. \u00a0According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/pressroom\/newsreleases\/highest-recycling-rates-in-austria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Environment Agency<\/a>, Austria, Germany and Belgium recycled the greatest amount of waste in Europe in 2010. \u00a0Austria recycles 63%, Germany (62%), and Belgium (58%). Close behind are the Netherlands (51%) and Switzerland (51%). \u00a0Approximately<span style=\"font-size:13px;line-height:19px\">\u00a035% of municipal waste in Europe was recycled in 2010, which represents a great improvement from 2001 when only 23% was recycled. \u00a0The EU-mandated target is for 50% of household waste to be recycled by 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-1237 gallery-columns-3 gallery-size-thumbnail'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/greenway\/dscf8644\/'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/greenway\/files\/2013\/06\/dscf8644-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" aria-describedby=\"gallery-1-1254\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<figcaption class='wp-caption-text gallery-caption' id='gallery-1-1254'>\n\t\t\t\tRecycling in Spain (Photo by Pamela Turner)\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/greenway\/dscf8972\/'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/greenway\/files\/2013\/06\/dscf89721-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" aria-describedby=\"gallery-1-1256\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<figcaption class='wp-caption-text gallery-caption' id='gallery-1-1256'>\n\t\t\t\tRecycling bin for Clothing\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/greenway\/dscf8662\/'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/greenway\/files\/2013\/06\/dscf8662-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" aria-describedby=\"gallery-1-1255\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<figcaption class='wp-caption-text gallery-caption' id='gallery-1-1255'>\n\t\t\t\tOverflowing Recycling Bins\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size:13px;line-height:19px\">In the U.S. the recycling rate is also showing improvement. \u00a0In <\/span><a style=\"font-size:13px;line-height:19px\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/osw\/nonhaz\/municipal\/msw99.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2011<\/a><span style=\"font-size:13px;line-height:19px\">, we generated about 250 million tons of trash and recycled and composted 34.7%, which is an improvement from 2000 when our recycling rate was 24.5%. \u00a0Many cities, like Athens, Georgia, have moved to single-stream recycling to increase the recycling rate. \u00a0People can put all types of recyclables into one container. It seems to be working. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:13px;line-height:19px\">There are many ways to look at recycling and how we can encourage people to reduce waste and recycle things they no longer need. \u00a0One solution doesn&#8217;t work in all countries. \u00a0We need to develop policies and initiatives designed with the people who live in that country in mind.\u00a0 I think the key is to encourage people to &#8220;rethink&#8221; how they manage waste.
