The 8 inches of rain that fell in the past two days highlighted the leaks in my gutters and downspouts.
Obviously, they aren’t doing their job of taking the water away from my home. These leaks can damage the woodwork, siding, foundation, and lead to wet basements and crawl spaces. The water can even seep into your walls causing structural problems and mold. These are preventable problems.
The most common cause of seams splitting is when leaves and other debris fall into the downspout and freeze. So what can you do? Clean the gutters regularly. That may be more than once a year if there are lots of trees around your house. At least once a year you should inspect the gutters and downspouts to make sure they are securely attached to house and not leaking. Simple leaks can be repaired using a silicone waterproof sealant.
Taking care of the things you own is an important part of living greener and you will save money in the long run!
